INSPECTION GUIDELINES FOR THE SCHOOL OF EARTH SCIENCES
Regulatory agencies conduct inspections for fire safety, handling, storage and disposal of hazardous materials and/or waste, medical waste management, wastewater discharge related to research activities.
A good starting point to prepare for inspections is making sure that previous inspection findings by regulatory agencies and self-inspections reports are corrected. Remember to document the corrections and share the findings with all members of your research team.
Fire Safety inspections are conducted by the Stanford University Fire Marshal's Office (SUFMO) or Palo Alto Fire Department.
- Hazardous Materials inspections are conducted by Santa Clara County-Department of Environmental Health, Hazardous Materials Program.
- Hazardous Waste inspections are conducted by Santa Clara County-Department of Environmental Health, Hazardous Materials Program.
- Wastewater inspections are conducted by the City of Palo Alto Public Works Department-Environmental Compliance Division.
- Unannounced inspections - There are rare occasions when a local, state, or federal governmental agency inspector may appear in your department offices or laboratories and ask to conduct an inspection or review documents.
