Nine months after my first trip to Guatemala I decided to return once again with my trusty companion Celia. We spent one week in the city and didn’t venture too much outside the capital. Much of the time I spent meeting with other ecologists, going to the Universidad del Valle de Guatamela and the Universidad de San Carlos.

Insect collections are a great way to find out about butterflies- locality data, morphology, seasonal information are all typically available in a good collection. So while I found no live C. lacinia the dead ones I found in the insect collections (the bottom specimen is from CECON) were quite informative.

All in all it was a relaxing but successful trip. We were also fortunate to be traveling during the Day of the Dead holiday and so we celebrated by sampling fiambre, a traditional salad dish made of many types of meats and vegetables. Celia and I are joined here by Celia’s brother Omar and our friend Maria.
