I was born in Maysville, Kentucky, but grew up across the Ohio River in West Union, Ohio. Growing up on the edge of Appalachia engendered in me a real love of the outdoors, in particular natural history. Since the Ohio River Valley also coincides with several major isoglosses, growing up there also left me with a natural curiosity about language variation and dialectology.
After high school, I entered THE Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, intent on majoring in Creative Writing. My studies would meander through various subfields of the English Department (creative writing, modern American literature, Renaissance literature, English education, English language studies) and eventually on to the Linguistics Department, with brief distractions in Dance and EEOB on the way. I graduated from OSU in June 2005 with degrees in both English and Linguistics.
Since then I've been a graduate student in the Ph.D. program in Linguistics at Stanford University. To read more about my academic activities at Stanford, refer to my research.
