In the School's Newsletter, Friday before the event:

REWARDS FOR USING ALTERNATIVE TRANSPORTATION

Walk-to-School Day is Wednesday, October 2nd, but every day that week there will be stickers (as long as supplies last) and raffle tickets for the children who walked, biked, carpooled etc.: used alternative transportation to school. The raffle drawing will be on Friday; the tickets may also be used to buy small items instead.

'WALKING SCHOOL BUS' FROM MITCHELL PARK TO HOOVER

During the week of Walk-to-School Day (September 30 - October 4) there will be a Walking School Bus from the Mitchell Park parking lot (at the Tennis and Squash Courts opposite the Community Center, see map) to Hoover School.

A group of volunteers will supervise the children's walk to school; when the group gets too big we'll have to ask some of the dropping-off parents to help out.

The walk is more than five minutes, so we'll have to leave at 7:53; no afternoon return service is planned.

We think parking in Mitchell Park is an option to consider for parents living North of Hoover; wouldn't you rather have a little walk and some fresh air than sit stuck in traffic in a slow-moving car?

We hope that the parents of participating children will get in touch with each other to continue this Walking School Bus.

If you'd like to join please contact Susi Khosla (123-4567), or me (345-6789).

10 Good Reasons to Walk or Bike to School:

  1. It's Fun! Walking and biking are fun ways to travel. There's so much to see, smell, touch, think and talk about along the way.
  2. It's Healthy. Walking and biking are great ways to get fit or to stay strong and healthy.
  3. It's Educational. An active start to the day improves mood, concentration, creativity and problem solving abilities.
  4. It's Non-polluting. Walking and biking trips cause no harmful emissions!
  5. It's Neighborly. Walking enables children and adults to make new friends and get to know their neighbors. Fewer cars outside the school entrance can improve the school's traffic problems, and it is safer for other children who walk.
  6. It's Less Stressful. Driving in commute traffic can be a hassle for both children and adults.
  7. It's a Chance to Teach and Learn Road Skills. Adults get to teach traffic safety skills and step out from the driver's perspective to get their children's point of view.
  8. It's Economical. Fewer car trips = lower gasoline costs.
  9. It's Safer. The presence of walkers and cyclists cues drivers to slow their speed and use caution.
  10. It's worth a Try. You may discover that it is more fun than you thought to walk or bike to different places.
Please consider walking or biking to school. If this is not possible, consider carpooling with another family.

Mitchell Park is a wonderful place to park and walk your child across to Hoover. On Walk-To-School Day we are planning to have a Walking Schoolbus bring your children from Mitchell Park to Hoover. If you would like to help, please contact Marco Schuffelen (234-5678), or Susi Khosla (123-4567).
