Hoover Kindergarten Traffic Guard Guidelines
3 Traffic guards should be on duty Mon-Fri. from 7:45 to 8:05 at the
Kindergarten drop-off area.
Traffic guards need to sign in at school office by 7:45 AM.
Orange vests need to be worn on traffic duty for high visibility.
Crosswalk traffic guard:
- Crosswalk traffic guard should NOT help in unloading Kindergartners.
- Crosswalk traffic guard must have STOP sign.
- Traffic guard may position him/herself on bike-path side of crosswalk
for better visibility of pedestrians as well as bikers.
- Before stoping cars, traffic guard needs to establish eye contact
with drivers as well as pedestrians wanting to cross.
- Traffic guard holds up STOP sign before stepping onto the crosswalk.
- Guard walks to the middle of crosswalk between the two car lanes
when stopping traffic.
For more visibility traffic guard may hold out
arms sideways.
Note:
- Traffic in both car lanes needs to be stopped while pedestrians are
crossing.
- Drivers who use drop-off lane as a drive-through must be discouraged!
Traffic Guards Unloading Kindergartners:
- 2 Traffic guards help Kindergartners out of their cars.
- Parents should be encouraged to pull up as close as possible
to crosswalk so that no backing-up occurs, but ...
- Drivers who pull up unto crosswalk for drop-off need to be reminded
to stop before crosswalk. This careless behavior can
create a very dangerous situation.
- Traffic guards may escort Kindergarners to school gate,
if time permits.
- Violators of drop-off rules (Kinders only drop-off, older kids okay
only if accompanied by Kinder) should be reminded of their mistake.
Note:
- Traffic guards need to remind bikers to wear bike helmets.
- Bikers need to get off their bikes before crossing
the street on crosswalk.
