Traffic Safety at Hoover
A few minutes of your attention and consideration can prevent a crash.
SCHOOL ACCESS
The only entry for cars to the Hoover campus is near the Carlson
Street intersection at East Charleston Road. You can only enter the
school driveway by driving west on Charleston (from Middlefield).
Taking a left turn onto campus going east on Charleston (coming from
Alma Street) is illegal.
On foot or with a bike there are several ways to get to Hoover:
through Mitchell Park, by the bike path along JLS and Hoover (on East
Meadow at Waverley; on Charleston just East of Carlson, next to the
cars' entry), and there is a small gate to the Schoolyard just off
Charleston near Stevenson House. (This gate and the schoolyard gate between the
Kindergarten classrooms and the Portables are only open in the early morning.)
ENTERING HOOVER CAMPUS BY CAR
The first leg of the roundway
has two lanes:
In the morning,
the right lane is for the Kindergarten drop-off
(if it's empty you may use it to get through, slowly);
the left lane ("keep clear") is for cars going to the grades 1-5 drop-off
or looking for parking
At the end of school,
the line for pick-up forms on the right side (there is no
Kindergarten or any other pick-up on the first part of the roundway); the
left lane is for cars looking for parking and should be kept open for
emergency vehicles.
Please use main transportation arteries (Middlefield Road, Alma Street,
El Camino Real, East
Meadow Street, East Charleston Road) when transporting children to and
from school. Be civil and
do not cut through or park in the neighborhoods, if possible.
If you wish to park on campus, you must go to the parking spaces to
the left of the pick-up lane or next to the Child Care Building;
please use the walkway along the sport fields fence and around the
Child Care Building to and from the schoolyard, and cross
only at the designated crossings.
KINDERGARTEN DROP-OFF
The Kindergarten drop-off is between the portables and Kindergarten
classrooms. It's for kindergartners only, though all children in a car
with a Kindergartner may unload to avoid a second unloading
event. Traffic monitors will be helping children out of the cars and
into the schoolyard.
We need three volunteers
here every morning 7:45-8:00.

Ray Bayer at ..
GRADES 1-5 DROP-OFF
Students in grades 1 through 5 can be dropped off and picked up in the
special lane provided on the JLS side of the campus, in
front of classrooms 1-8. Please pull all the way forward or close to
the last car in line against the right curb, and unload quickly.
Do not let children or adults out of or into your car when it's not at
the curb.
Try
to say your goodbyes before coming to your final stop, and try not to
put backpacks etc. in the trunk of your car, it takes too much
time. If you're bringing a bike or another large object, try to come
in early and park in regular parking.
Also pull forward as far as you can when exiting, to allow other cars
to enter the drop-off zone.
PICK-UP
At the end of their school day all students should be picked up at the
drop-off and pick-up area in front of classrooms 1-8.
The Kindergarten Drop-Off area is not a pick-up zone.
Please pull all the way forward
or close to the last car in line against the right curb;
also pull forward as far as you can when exiting, to allow other cars
to enter the drop-off zone.
Do not let
children into your car on the second lane from the
curb.
Do not leave your car unattended in the drop-off/pick-up area.
If your student passengers are not in the pick-up waiting area,
either park in designated parking or exit and circle
through again.
GENERAL
Children may not leave the school grounds unless accompanied by an adult.
Cross only at the designated crossings, do not cross
in the middle of the street.
ATTENTION DRIVERS
Please consider carpooling or parking in
Mitchell park (enter at East Meadow or Middlefield): park at the tennis
courts opposite the library for a six-minute walk
to Hoover.
Do not let children or adults out of or into your car when it's not at
the curb.
Do not drop off or pick up students on Charleston: it would block the
bike lane and interfere with cars entering and exiting the campus.
Making a left turn leaving the campus at Charleston is not
allowed in the morning; in the afternoon it is not recommended.
TRAFFIC MONITORS NEEDED
We also need volunteer traffic monitors at the Pedestrian Crossing
near the Office: one every morning 7:45-8:00 and one every afternoon
2:00-2:15 (Wednesday 1:30-1:45). If you don't have much time you can
still help out as an occasional backup.
