My Dear -
such a shock to read of your medical trials. I was thankful for your hair pictures because your
first pic brought you clearly into the focus of my memory. Of course you and
your lovely mother are vivid memories in the PSGC corner of my mind. (Dad
person I knew less well but always enjoyed seeing him in the audience admiring
you and your chorister friends.) Roberta may never have heard this, but you and
she together presented one more reason for hoping Crissy made the cut into
PSGC. As we were waiting for Crissy to audition, you and Roberta emerged from
the audition room, she saying to you, "Now Patty Jeanne, I don't usually
say anything to the girls at audition time, but I know you will be a wreck, so
I am telling you now, of course you auditioned successfully into the
group." As a potential choir mum with a talented and sensitive young chick
about to audition, my thought was, "how warm and human - this will be a
good place." And, of course, it has been far, far superior to
"good" - so excellent, in fact, they just
can't get rid of me. Crissy moved on and is still singing jazz, now with
"Genesis" at Mount Hood. I expect she will complete her music degree
at Central Washington University. Patty Jeanne, you take the best of care.
Please greet your parents warmly for me and know that you are in the thoughts
and prayers of our family. Thank you so much for the beautiful and informative
web site. I know you are a scientist and a musician, but are you aware you are
also quite a fine teacher? It's in the genes, no? We will be in touch through

to you for your winter term at Stanford. XXXO

Vincristine!). Your web site is almost as amazing as your attitude, keep it up!
I was treated at City of Hope Hospital in Duarte, CA. In the front there is a
gate that has the following quote: "There is no profit in curing the body
if in the process we destroy the soul." I repeated the phrase every night
before I went to bed-I just thought I would pass it along. Your strength of
character, so apparent in your writings, will carry you through this. You are
truly incredible. If you ever need to talk to someone who understands the ups

my cancer was discovered it had spread via the lymphatic system so i was
scheduled for a 50 week campaign of chemo. Midway through the campaign I need
more surgery. So the chemo was suspended for 16 week to aloow my body to
recover enough from the chemo to stand the surgrery and then recover enough
from the surgery to endure the chem. All in all I had nearly two years of
chemo. I noticed that you are a skier. I am as well. Something that helped me
very much during my long campaign was to go skiing immediatly after chem.
Naturaly I couldnt ski anything very challanging or ski for very long but just
being on a mountain top msade me feel wonderful I could honestly tell mysell
"you aint dead yet". Maybe something like this will work for you.
Good luck in your campaign. tim forquer

as a stem cell donor. They want to send literature, but I want an appointment
to get my blood tested. It takes about 4 weeks to be typed and I heard about 4
months to be matched. Although, you are not now a candidate for a donor
transplant I wanted to be on the donor list just in case. I read that only 4%
of the people on the registry are of Asian descent. The odds of a match are
better within the same race, however any one reading
this guest book who's under 60 and in good health is eligible. There may be a
fee for the test. Most bone marrow transplants today are done through stem cell
harvesting from blood. While I'm hoping you won't need a donor, who knows, an
aunt might just be the right match! Lucy Chow Chow and Stetson Samoyed join me
in sending positive energy your way. Maybe your other fans will step forward to

PJ: Just checked in today to
see how you are doing, or should I say what 'they' are doing to you, albeit at
your discretion. Listen to everyone, then listen to
yourself--heart, mind, and soul. I talked to a friend today who said that she
had felt the presence of an angel late the other night when she was outside
with her neighbor in the backyard. Now, I have never had this happen to me, but
it is interesting when you begin to share experiences like this with others,
that others begin to open up and talk about the things they have experienced.
Anyway, she said the angel was her grandmother and that she indicated what she
(my friend) should do regarding her own mother who is elderly and having some
difficulties. Jim is sure that angels have been watching over him during the
past three years. He has had several signs. Maybe being sick makes one more
receptive to these messengers. As I said, I have never experienced any of this
first hand; but I am not going to deny others' experiences either. Anyway, you
clearly have tough decisions to make. I will continue to send you warm thoughts
and continued ability to listen to everyone (even angels?), including yourself,
and to find the answers within. Don't know if it is hot there, but tonight
there is a great cool breeze bringing life to the evening. Hope you'll get in a
visit to PDX before too long so you can enjoy one of these evenings, too. Life
around here is busy--yard work, meals, water fights in the backyard, an
occasional game of scrabble or boggle in the evening. John (my son) and friend

you imagine! When you and Jessica joined, it was so much smaller. We have
performances practically every month now. Remember when it was just 2 per
year?!? Times do change, but the Girlchoir spirit doesn't. Each year I think
that it can't get better. When you and Jessica graduated in 1999, I thought
that the best singers were gone and that we'd just have to wait and see what
happened in the next season. Well, the next season was even better. And last
year's was better than that. I can say that now, without prejudice, because I
no longer have a daughter in choir. Girls still find satisfaction in the their desire for music. They find lifelong friends in
choir. Here I go again. It just can't get any better than that. If you are back

Hi PJ, I thought you might be
entertained by a few short stories about recent life here with the Thompsons.
The first one I'll share with you is the story of how I got my new used car.
Some time last year, Amanda informed Bruce and I that beginning this September,
her school schedule would not allow her to carpool or to be dropped off by one
of us, so we would have to get a third car. We knew this was coming and were
thankful she had gotten through 3 years of college without one. So, last
January, Bruce and I began to discuss (more like debate) what kind of car we
needed. Bruce wanted something for under $1000.00. This seemed to be his only
criteria. I wanted something newer than the 2 cars we already own with better
gas mileage. I was thinking about spending between $5000. and
$7000. I think you can see how we came to debate rather than discuss. I
also thought it might be nice to have something different and fun and sporty.
Well, you can imagine what we found for $1000. Nothing.
Even at $5000. choices were slim. Now keep in mind Bruce and I do not like to
jump into anything. So now it's June. My "85 Subaru has developed several
new quirks in addition to the ones it already had. For example, the dashboard
only illuminates on one half. You never know the time or radio station. The gas
gauge registers half full or higher. At half full, the gas light comes on
eventhough you have another 130 miles before a fill-up in necessary unless you
hit a big bump which causes it to register the correct amount for about five
minutes. It is very important, therefore, to reset the mileage counter each time
you fill-up. All the windows can be lowered from the driver's master panel.
Only the driver's side front and rear can be raised from the master panel. The
front passenger window can be raised from its own panel. The back passenger
window requires the efforts of 3 people: one to hold the master switch, one to
hold the door switch, and the other to pull the window up at the same time. Of
course, the car must be running and facing downhill for success. To put gas in
the car, one person must hold the inside release button while another manually
flips the gas cover as the spring is gone. Remember, now it was June. Well, the
car began to shake slightly while idleing which made me leery to drive it to
and from work. Keep in mind we are still looking for a third "beater
car". We decided in late June that since Bruce only had to drive 3 miles
to work that he would take the Subaru and I would take the '90 Jeep. First day
of summer school, I get up and leave. Bruce gets up an hour later to drive the
Subaru for the first time to the first day of summer school and it won't start.
He gets a neighbor to give him a jump and off he goes. I get a phone call at
work that afternoon that he needs me to pick up a new battery as the Subaru
will not start now even with a jump. All is well for another week or so. Then I
notice a pile of sawdust behind the driver's seat in the Subaru. Apparently,
the bottom of the seat has a tear and the insides are slowly leaking out. Now
Bruce sits lopsided when driving and develops severe lower back pain. During
this time, we still look for third car but now Bruce is willing to spend a
little more. My plan is now to buy 2 cars which makes
Bruce very nervous. He works with the car guy at the Credit Union and actually find a car that suits my needs two months later. Our new
plan is for Bruce to drive the Subaru, Amanda to drive the Jeep, and I will
drive whatever we buy. Everything seems great, but Bruce needs a week to mull
over the new purchase. The car guy says he'll hold the new used car until Monday.
The Thursday before "decision" Monday, we take the Subaru in for
servicing. When we pick it up on Saturday, the mechanic has written a note that
says, "Do not spend anymore money on this car. Sell or donate
immediately." Needless to say, Monday we went to the Credit Union and
drove home the new used car. This is not the end. Now, I have been driving the
new car since early August with no problems. Amanda has had no problems with
the Jeep. Bruce, however, has not had such luck. Now, nothing on the dash works,
so you never know how fast you're going. The intermittent windshield wipers
don't work when on but when off, work after a bump for 3 or 4 swipes. The car
clock alarm goes off at about 11:30AM everyday if you're driving. To turn it
off, you must pull over and turn the car off. None of the windows go up. And
just yesterday, he ran out of gas. I am still advocating for another new car,
but Bruce would like to get 3 more years out of the Subaru. I'm not sure what
to make out of the whole situation. I do know that everyone has a "car
story". This may give you some idea of how a good part of our summer went.
I hope you can laugh along with us as we think it's pretty funny looking back.
I'll send you another strange but true story this next week about our ABC store
experience. Penny

Penny Thompson from PCC writes:
Good mornig PJ, Here is my
first installment about the famous and numerous ABC stores. First, I had heard
about ABC stores before actually visiting one this past summer in Waikiki. What
I didn't know was how many there really are. Initially, I told Maris she could
easily find our hotel/condo by looking for the ABC store on the side street of
Seaside. I soon realized there were three just in the one block across from us.
It soon became a kind of game to see how many we could count when going places.
One day Bruce and I walked the entire main beachfront strip of Waikiki from the
park in central downtown to the Aquarium. We counted over 35 ABC stores on just
one side of the street. Another night we found a "deluxe" one around
the corner from us. It was three to four times bigger than any of the others.
We were so thrilled we took Amanda and Maris on a special walk just to see it.
You can tell we had developed a unique fondness for them. While we were in
Waikiki, the ABC stores were having a receipt contest which, of course, we had
to participate in as a family. The deal was that if you collected ABC receipts
totaling over $100.00, you received a free mug or 2002 calendar. My family
really wanted the calendar and set out to buy as many needed items as possible
exclusively from ABC stores. This led to an accumulation of white ABC bags.
Well, I couldnot get into the purchase part of the activity, but I decided the
bags were a real "keeper." My idea was to take them home and use them
to line wastebaskets in both bathrooms. Sooo, our room quickly filled with
billowy ABC bags and piles of receipts. Every time housekeeping showed up,
Bruce and I would frantically shoo them away from piles of bags and receipts.
As time went on, we all began to obsess with the bags and receipts. Amanda,
Maris, and Bruce would actually ask strangers for unwanted receipts as they
feared we would not make the $100 mark. At one point, I collected bags from
other guests in our building. I could not believe they didn't see the potential
use for these great white plastic bags with the cut-out handles. Well, the
morning we were to leave, Bruce and Amanda added up all the receipts and
quickly dashed over to the closest ABC store to get our calendar. I must say it
is quite a beauty. The only drawback is it contains only 4 photos which are
recylced 3 times each throughout the calendar. Also, I did bring home all the
bags which I prouldy use in my bathrooms. I will stop here for now. However,
keep in mind that my next I am going to tell you about a recent dream which
centers around our experiences with ABC stores. On another note, folks at PCC
ask about you often. Let me know if you want anything special from Oregon.

Hi PJ, I know you've
probabaly patiently been waiting to hear more about ABC stores, and I do have
more to share with you. About three weeks ago, as I was returnig to bed in the
middle of the night, I tripped over that bag which holds my supply of ABC store
bags. Well, several flew around the room and I walked on them which made a
rustling sound that woke Bruce up. I had to turn on the light to gather the
bags together. I guess this incident led to my dream involving ABC. I must say
it was one of the most vivd dreams I have ever had, so I can remember even the
smallest details. The dream began with my family and I back in Waikiki in the
same room we had spent our vacation in. We followed pretty much the same
routine only this time instead of accumulating $100.00 in receipts from ABC we
had to collect 100 ABC bags in order to get a mug or calendar. A lot of the
dream included conversation like Amanda telling me that I was ruining her idea
of "family togetherness" by not enthusiatically embracing the idea of
collecting 100 bags. Finally, after much pressure from everyone, I became the
most dedicated collector of bags. In my dream, I would walk the beach picking
up stray bags. I made sure I was in the room when housekeeping came so that they
dare not touch my bags. Whenever Amanda, Maris, Bruce or I went to an ABC store
to buy even a pack of gum, I would insist that the clerk double bag our items
so that we could get more bags. They were everywhere in our room, but we didn't
care. We really wanted that calendar. Then my dream took a strange twist. We
went to a water park with huge slides and a lagoon. (Maris,
actually begged us to take her to one when we were in Hawaii, but we didn't.)
Anyway, at this water park with every purchase or activity, the staff gave
customers ABC bags. If you wanted a beach towel, it came in an ABC bag. When we
helped Maris dive and she did a good job, someone would swim over to give her
an ABC bag. However, I didn't want anymore bags because I had already saved
well over 100 and thought it was wasteful, so I kept refusing to take them. At
the end of the day, we found we had bought a lot of stuff, in particular a huge
quantity of Wheat Thins. We could not carry all our loot to the car, which for
some reason was parked over a mile away, because we didn't have any bags. Now,
my family was very upset with me for refusing to take bags all day, but I had
an idea. I went to small stand where they sold fried chicken to go packaged in
ABC bags, and I persuaded the young clerk to give me some bags for our junk. I
got back to my family and began packing our belongings. Then the park public
safety officers, two really big men in full uniform came and explained that I
couldn't keep the bags because I had not bought any chicken, and they further
told me that the young man who had given me the bags had been fired. At this
point, all the other water park guests were streaming out of the park past us.
The women passing by would talk about me as the poor, stupid woman who didn't
understand the value of these bags. Dreams are strange, and at this point, we
were suddenly back in our hotel room packing to leave
Hawaii. Bruce and Amanda counted our bags and ran off to the ABC store. They
came back with the same calendar we really have. In my dream, we discovered the
photo recycling scam. (You remember that the real calendar has only four
photos, each used three times in the calendar.) Then, just like on a giant
billboard with neon lights, I saw the words "RIP-OFF" blink off and
on. When I woke up, I was so happy that I had actually saved the bags but still
think the calendar is not all it's cracked up to be. I don't have any more ABC
stories to share with you, which probably makes you feel lucky. I will tell you
about our great Wheat Thins controversy, though, some time this next week. It
started in Waikiki and is still going on. PJ, I hope you get some energy back
soon. Like many others, I think about you daily. Penny

Hi PJ, Welcome back to
Portland! Even though you're not in your own house yet, it must be nice to be
in more familiar surroundings. Where to begin the great Wheat Thins story?
First, you need to know that WTs have been a family favorite since forever. A
box does not last long in the Thompson household. Thus, when we flew to HA, I
packed a box to snack on in the plane. Of course, they were all eaten by the
time we arrived. Fortunately, one of the airline snacks was individaul WT
packages which I promptly stowed away for later consumption. Well, when we got
settled in our hotel, I asked the girls to think about what they might like to
eat. We had a small kitchen and had decided to eat "in" as much as
possible. Off we went to the gorcery store. We bought fruit, cereal, cheese,
milk, chips, and a big box of WTs. By noon the next day, the WTs were gone and
a big argument about who had eaten them all followed. Bruce then went to an ABC
store and bought more which lasted about 30 minutes. The next day I went back
to the grocery store and loaded up on WTs. To be honest, I can't remember
Amanda or Maris eating anything besides WTs, cereal and fruit the whole time.
Anyway, throughout our entire vacation, WTs were a constant source of battle.
When we got back to Beaverton, one of the first things I needed to do was
grocery shopping. I went to Albertsons and good news! WTs were on sale! I
quickly grabbed two big boxes thinking I'd make a lot of friends at home. I had
not noticed that one box was "original" and the other was
"multi-grain". What a mistake! For days I had to hear how only
regular WTs were edible. How could I have made such a mistake! Well, I wasn't
happy and I decided I would not buy anymore WTs until all were gone including
the multi-grain. Then I began to notice a few in the trash everyday. Bruce,
Amanda, and Maris swore they were eating them, and eventually the box was
empty. So, on my next shopping trip, I grab a new box of WTs only this time I
failed to notice that they were "low salt". Again,
not exceptable. I explained that I had not noticed the many variations
available. In fact, WTs take up four shelves in the store. They have original,
super-size, low salt, sour cream and onion, and multi-grain. The badgering and
bickering continued for some time. However, I have solved the problem. Now, I
buy only Ritz. This seems to be working just fine. If I can drop off anything
for you, PJ, let me know. Again, many people are thinking about you. Penny

neighbors and the Rules used in the program. When you ran the program, a lovely
computer tapestry of colors and patterns evolved on the screen. I remember
noting that a single cell might continue or cease, but either
way it was still present in and affecting the overall pattern of the
color tapestry on the screen. Patty Jeanne, you have touched the life
"tapestries" of us who knew you. The patterns and richness of those
tapestries continue with part of you interwoven into them. I will really miss

I am a pending bone marrow
transplant patient at Stanford, currently beginning the stem cell mobilization
process. I came across PJ's remarkable web site by accident today while doing a
search for information about stem cell mobilization. Her charts and data were
of immense help in reassuring me that my plummeting blood counts are normal at
this point. As such, her web site continues to provide the helpful information
she was intent on sharing. More importantly, it led me to read her entire
story, and then to read through the guestbook. I was sad to learn only at the
end of the guestbook that she had passed on, but her courage and her incredible
impact on all of you, and now also on me. On a side note, I am an Intel
engineer and have been connected with STS, as have many of you. Coincidence? Maybe not ;^) Finally, since my disease,
treatment plan, and prognosis are so similar to PJ's, I am naturally quite
curious about why the transplant was not curative. They tell me mine probably
won't be either. If anyone would care to share medical details that might help
me with what lies ahead and finds it not too painful, I'd welcome email at covell@jps.net . I will be accessing email from Stanford during
my transplant next month.

I was very sad to read about
PJ's death in today's paper. I salute her bravery and spirit in the battle that
she fought for her life. And I salute the sincere efforts of the health workers
who served her. However, I am sad that she did not know about and try an
alternative treatment first. Insulin Potentiation Therapy (IPT) is a simple
modification of chemotherapy that uses the same drugs, only in much smaller
doses, boosted by insulin. The insulin apparently selectivley targets cancer
cells and boosts their absorption of the drugs. Normal cells are essentially
unaffected, so there are usually no side effects. No nausea, no hair loss, less
fatigue. And IPT can be used as a first treatment, avoiding surgery and
radiation, and their side effects. Sadly, IPT was first used for treating
cancer in the 1950s, and has been ignored for half a century, probably because
it might disrupt the business of medicine. Happily, more doctors are learning
IPT, almost 30 so far in the US, including two in northern California. I hope
that someone at Stanford will finally become interested in IPT, and make it
available to patients here. You can read all about IPT at http://www.IPTQ.org

we should live our lives. The difficulties we are facing are nothing compared
to what you had to fight against. I lost my mom recently to brain tumor, so I
could somehow relate to what you went through, such as the radiation therapy
and chemotherapy. They were really harmful to a person's health. However, you
were always so optimistic! It's a hugh regret that I

remember after coming back from Oxford, seeing Patty Jeanne. She was in the

Pale, her hair fallen out, wearing a mask that was pink in
color. It was a moment of excitement for her. For me,
fear, perhaps. I saw her completely changed from when last I had seen
her. Now, she seemed like a cancer patient. Later I found out that this brief
encounter made her "sooo" happy. (Tears wanting to
fall.) Tears of joy? Of
sadness. And when I saw her last, she was again in a car. She was on her
way to the Med Center. Frail, weak, or, more accurately,
smaller, thinner, with a swirl of hair. She laughed so hard that I told
her she should not laugh too hard. Hands trembling,
breath/words more difficult to come out, yet happy, singing, full of life.
This is Patty Jeanne."

handed the phone to my mom, started crying, and didn't even speak for over an
hour. I have a picture of us inside the lodge at Mt. Hood Meadows the week of
Thanksgiving of 2000. It stands proudly on my desk when I'm at school, and on my dresser when I'm at home. It comes with me
wherever I travel so that I can always see you. I didn't even notice until
about a month ago that we are holding our hands in the same position in our
laps (not a very common one, I may add), and it wasn't even planned. I miss you
so much. There have been many times that I've called your house to say hello to
your parents, when I've almost found myself asking if you were home so I could
talk to you too. If only it was that easy. If there were a way by which we
could have those long phone conversations again, if I could hear your laugh,
hear your enthusiasm as you tell me how much snow has just fallen at the
mountain, see the fire in your eyes with every endeavor you took on, feel the
warmth in your hugs, and the sincerity in all that you did. Every day, several
times a day I think of so many things that I don't want to forget, and I know
that you will help me in remembering them. Take the compass now, and help to
guide me on the rest of my journey. You know where I need to go and how I have
to get there. Your spirit, your legend will never die. You had too much fire
inside you for it to every burn out. Every thought, every remembrance from
anyone is like the smallest breath that it takes to turn embers into a roraring
blaze. May we never stop breathing. All my love,

It's obviously not something to fear. We all can do it successfully. So, I

Hi Patty, Your parents asked
me and the rest of the Clarpicz to share our memories of you in Band, so here
goes. I remember the first day you joined band during your Frosh Spring, and I
was sexion leader (?Mom?). You were psyched and klued
from the very beginning; in fact I believe I awarded you
?Most Psyched Frosh? at the Clarpic Banquet that
Spring. I remember within a week or two you and Neil had convinced half
of your Hall in FroSoCo to join the Clarpicz. You couldn?t
wait to get on Chartline and had several songs in mind immediately that you
wanted to chart. Before All-Campus that Fall you told me you had lymphoma and
had to leave for Oregon that weekend for treatment, but you were back on campus
for the night, so you could still do All-Campus. You were determined to have a
ball, and you did. I was always amazed at the resilience you showed during the
whole period when you were sick. You never lost that sense of humor that all of
us Bandies know and love in each other; I wonder whether I would have done the
same. You continued to be psyched and klued even while many miles away. I
remember you played the ?you? game and convinced more
people to join band, although I?m not sure how many of
them actually showed up. Two emails from you to clarpicline I remember in
particular. One was in response to Matt Lag, who had unwittingly emailed the
list about a surprise banner we were sending you; you posted a message that
said something to the effect of ?please some one tell
me Matt?s email contains a virus and therefore I shouldn?t open it.? The second
email was one in response to our brainstorming session for Davis Day Beginnings
last Spring in which you presented at least 20 new bits of choreography
including: Butterfly (?start by lying on the ground in your cocoon (sp?) and
emerge into a flying butterfly?), Sheepdog (?choose one person as the sheepdog
and have everyone else be sheep, the sheep wander and make sheep noises, the
dog runs around barking at the sheep and keeping them in a group?), and Movie
Watching (?everyone sits facing the same direction intently watching a movie
(as in a movie theater), eat popcorn, drink soda, turn off cell phones?). Every
reprieve you had when you could play with us again was a treasure. Band is for
life and beyond; your spirit will be with me, the Clarpicz, and the LSJUMB
forever. Love, Liz-Mom (currently great-grandma)

Patty, I've been working with
people a lot the past few weeks to plan the dedication ceremony, trying to iron
out the logistics and the order of events, but the mood of the event we
couldn't plan beforehand, it just had to happen. As it turns out, though it was
a cold day (which you would revel in), there was a strong sense of coming
together and a warmth in the air--thoughtful yet full of energy. It was you who
brought us together yesterday afternoon, not the actual planning of the event.
You continue to inspire me with your intelligence and your creativity and your
ideas and your wit, and above all your "uff da."
"Enthusiasm" is a little weak, and I think only Norwegians know how
to express it right. Today I was thinking about our Winterim trip Junior year
of high school, when we went backpacking in the canyonlands in Utah and I had
to take a math exam on a certain day that was in the middle of the trip. It was
going to be an impossible exam for me and I could only hope to get one or two
problems right. The day before the exam when we were having lunch, you told me
that studies have shown that people who are listening to Mozart score higher on
math exams than people who take the exam in silence. So you helped me try to
think of and sing as much Mozart music as we could so I could get it stuck in
my head for the exam. Well, the one problem I got right on the exam, I am sure
was because I had Mozart stuck in my head. Thank you, Patty, for always
inspiring me. I miss you so much. Lots of love, Amy Liz

Dear Patty, I tried to get to
the memorial service on Monday - I was on BART, I'd figured out the route from
Berkeley to Stanford (BART, bus, Caltrain, shuttle - why they don't just run a
shuttle directly I'll never know) - when the train stopped just before West
Oakland. There had been a "security breach" in the West Oakland
station, so there wasn't any BART transbay traffic. By the time I could have
picked up a transbay bus, I would have missed the service. I'm sorry I couldn't
make it... so I hope that I can say everything I want to say here. I still use
the totebag from the event we met at - the International Science and
Engineering Fair, 1997. My display was just to the right of yours, and we had a
lovely time talking while waiting for the judges to come around. We sat
together at the awards ceremony, too. I knew practically nothing about
programming at that point, but I thought your CAs were the coolest things ever.
As I recall, you won an award for them. My work was nowhere near that good, and
I was in awe of yours. Oh, and the guy who was kind of stalking me at ISEF
turned out to be a pretty cool guy at CMU. :) After ISEF, we wrote to each
other on a very steady basis - every day, every three at the most. Our subject
lines weren't just silly things like "hi" or "good morning"
or "Re: your mail," either. They were full sentences, and we'd always
be carrying out a conversation in them that was totally unrelated to the rest
of the e-mail. Once I forgot and you got the same subject line back that you'd
sent to me - you didn't let that slide by! No, I got a subject line the next
time with a "Are you getting bored with this?" or something like
that. :) This is the part that gives me the most pain to write. We pretty much
lost touch after you started at Stanford. I must have sent you my e-mail
address when I graduated from Carnegie Mellon last year and started grad school
at Berkeley, otherwise I wouldn't have heard about the service. It's rather
ironic. I was a math major with linguistics and physics minors at CMU, and now
I'm a grad student in Logic and the Methodology of Science. I read your
"Academics" section on your website, and I see that we were getting
closer than ever in interests. Logic, NLP, psychology... I love it all too. I
think we'd have more to say to each other now than ever. So, Patty, I'll read a
bit of extra philosophy of language for you tonight!

Your memorial service at

forever remain a family. I thought about my daughter about to turn 1 and how
grateful we must be for whatever time we have together. I thought about my
father dying of cancer. I read the articles about you and saw the pictures and
the video and listened and talked to your friends. I was amazed at how much you
had accomplished and how much you enjoyed life. I saw The Band play for you - I
think you would have liked that. I saw FroSoCo frosh who didn't even know you
come to be part of this celebration and honoring of your life. I released a
balloon with others in our community and watched as they quickly flew up to the
clouds. I thought about you sitting with your friends in the upper level of
Ricker the last time I saw you. You were laughing and joking around with them.
I didn't realize we were in the hospital at the same time as I was having
Sarah, and that you tried to visit us. I pass by your room and think of you,
and I know you will always have a home here and will always be remembered with
love. Your bench and your tree outside will be a special place for all of us
who live here, and we will tell your story to future students. Your dad said
that one of your mottos was "it's better with
friends". I've been thinking about that. Whatever it is we have to go
through in life, it always is better with friends. How did you get to be so
wise and have so much to teach the rest of us? Your parents are two of the best

usually to catch up and ask for a reference. I called Pat about a month ago,
and Pat listened attentively to me, as she always had. Afterwards Pat said,
"Sounds like you're doing really well. I'd be happy to provide you with a
strong recommendation. By the way, I got your messages you left awhile ago, but
I've been really very busy." Pat always speaks with an uplifting tone as
she nears the end of her sentences. This time was no different. Then Pat told
me about Patty. With all that Pat shared, both stories of inspiration and
frustration, I promised Pat that I would check out Patty's site. I was
compelled. Upon my first visit, about a month ago, I was at work, read a few
lines, then stopped. Amazed and touched. Those were my first feelings. Work
could not do Patty's story justice for me. Today is August 25, a peaceful

PJ: My mother experienced a
rare reaffirmation/communication from a friend hours after she had died
yesterday. It reminded me again of how close we can be and how in touch we can
be with those who are no longer with us on this plane. So, I am thinking of you
and wishing you well--hoping that you are finding ways to communicate that to
those who love you and think of you.

I have just spent hours
reading every word of Patty Jeanne's remarkable journey. I came upon the site
after my husband's recent diagnosis of NHL. In the midst of all of the
scientific and medical information her voice reached out to me like a beacon. I
was stunned and speechless to realize that the entries stopped because of her
death and feel as if I've lost a friend. How is it
that someone so young and ill can elicit that kind of connection with words on
a screen? To Patty Jeanne's parents... your loss is immeasurable, I know, but
please take solace in the fact that her powerful spirit still lives in these
pages. Instead of feeling less hopeful after realizing her struggle ended in
death, and fearful that my husband's may do the same, I feel inspired by the
way in which she lived her life. Thank you.

Hi Patty- I have been
thinking about you almost non-stop lately, but I know that you know that.
Today, for the first time in a quite a while I read over the many page pamphlet
from your memorial service, and still alost can't believe what a remarkable
life you led. As Thanksgiving Break nears, I can't help but be reminded of last
year, when I was so worried about you in the hospital, and so far in denial of
how close you were to the end. I remember looking into your eyes and seeing
nothing but pure love, and that love I will cherish until we meet again. All my
love, Carole-Anne

that you would probably pick the Eagles, and sure enough you pulled out the
"Hell Freezes Over" album. I must say you hvae timless taste in

you. I can envision you elated at a white Christmas, getting upset at the first
sign that the snow is even showing the slightest sign of letting up. I remember
watching oyu every year at the Girlchior concert, and humming along from the
audience. This is such a mystical time of year, and as I look at the flame in
the eternity bowl, all I think of is your smile, yoiur laugh, and the light in
your eyes, and know that as long as the candle is burning strong, your eternal
light will continue to glow. I love you, Carole-Anne

Patty, I was just home last

communicating on a level that is far beyond anything we are capable of here in
this realm. Suddenly I had the desire to reach into the room, as if reaching
into space. I felt as though this gesture was almost assisting the
communication. I was not saddened at all by being there, but instead I had
feelings of peace, solice, energy, concentration, and dedication all at the
same time. Thank you for providing all these things to me by way of
spirit-to-spirit communication in a world of distractions that makes us forget
them so frequently. I love you, Carole-Anne

Hey PJ--I just got some great
pictures in the mail yesterday from your parents. They were the photos from
your memorial service here at Stanford. My how quickly time flies, that was
about a year ago now and I can hardly believe that at all. Its
so good to read about eveyone's recent reflections, but still I can't help but
miss you. On another note, I was over at FroSoCo last week doing announcements.
Since they had hall meetings, I had to make the trip up to the 3rd floor of
Schiff. As always, our one room triple room door was wide open and it was the
center of social life for the hall. You wouldn't believe it, but the girls who
now live in our room have it set up almostly exactly as we had it. The beds are
over in the alcove and they have sheets and cloth hanging down to make it a bit
more private. There are desks exactly where you and I had ours and Jen's had a
little bed where her desk was. Ah, good times. It feels like yesterday but also
ten years ago. Miss and love you, Kristen

I gotta say it's a funny
feeling I get writing in your guestbook, Patty. I had my Tai-chi lesson this
evening. It's improving my posture - you know - I have a general problem
slouching. I watched Much Ado About Nothing, put on by the Stanford Shakespeare
Society. They made it into a sort of musical, with the music of George and Ira
Gerswhin. It was really fun to watch. Amy and I were just talking about you the
other day. We thought back to Psych40 and the one time in Morris's room we were
discussing the experiment I had volunteered to do in class. Been reading a book
entitled Genes, People, and Languages. It goes through a brief history of Homo
Sapiens. I feel very human, very mortal, when I think of things in terms of
GENERATIONS of people, and I especially feel my mortality when I am tired, and
I know that have to sleep. It's a biological limitation that I run up against
every day. I hope the Undiscovered Country is not too boring for you, that
there is enough mischeviousness to keep things interesting.

Patty, I wake up every
morning, get out of bed, and see a picture of us on my dresser. That picture
goes with me wherenever I travel, and is with me at school too. Not an hour
goes by each day that I don't think of you. Every night I go to bed knowing
what time it is via the clock you gave me. Tonight I got home from spending two
days at Stanford for the commencement ceremonies. I remembered being there with
you when you took such care and joy, and probably too much energy to show me
around the campus. Parts of these last couple days somehow reminded me of
different memories that we share: Helen Gordon, Nor'Wester,
"Bud-Biz," and a few others. There was such a feeling of unity and
pride there, and I know that during your time there you greatly contributed to
that as well. Obviously the reason for this weekend was to celebrate the
graduation of those who had worked so hard to get to that point. But more than
that, it is to celebrate all their precipitating accoplishments. Also it is to
give them a foundation to henceforth expound from,
making each individual feel the potential that he or she has inside. My trusty
Oxford dictionary defines a 'celebration' to be engaging in a ceremony of
public praise. The celebration of this weekend celebrated past feats as well as
those to come. Anyone who has accomplished anything, or just as impoortantly:
has visions and goals, cannot do it alone. Thank you for
being such an example of both countless accomplishments (both public and
private) and inspirational goals. I will celebrate you, for you, with
you- forever. I love you, Carole-Anne
