Tahoe

Heat strikes early on trees,

hangs on afternoon branches

drooping with the sheer weight

of Hell’s Breath.

The Lake counters; a cool swell

shifts upward from frozen silence,

pushing spray to cool

thickened air.

The suffusion of hot and cold--

wetness slakes the parched air,

a cool kiss

on a burnt cheek.
