Miracle
Above
the calls of vendors and the hum of a hundred conversations we hear
shouting. It is the voice of Teo. He courses among the stalls, collars friend
and stranger alike and exclaims, “I am!” then leaps in the air, shouting
again: “I am!” He grasps Maria’s arm, fire in his eyes, “I
am!” Her pears and tomatoes spill and
roll on the ground. Teo’s friend Marcus
runs from his stall, embraces him, sees his tears of joy, tells him, “Teo, I am
so happy for you. You know, I, too, am.
Each of us here is.” Teo takes him by the cheeks, “Yes,
Marcus! Yes, you are!” Again he cries
and runs wildly through the marketplace, grabbing friend and stranger, crying,
“I am! You are!”
