Research Interests:
Inequalities are a fact of life. Some people have higher salaries than others, some individuals succeed more than others, and some people are treated better than others. Sometimes people perceive these inequalities as acceptable, or even natural. But other times, these inequalities elicit strong responses and feelings. I am interested in the way people make sense of and respond to inequality. When and why are some inequalities tolerable, and others not? How do people’s understandings of inequality affect how they experience and respond to it? My interest in these questions manifests itself in two related areas of research. In my first area of research, I explore the idea that the way inequalities are described – as either advantage or disadvantage – affects the psychological experience of and response to inequality. My second area of research explores the consequences of the emotions elicited by the perception of just and unjust inequalities.
