(National) Culture & Work Practices

We are conducting studies on the relationship between national culture and work practices. Our first study examines designers from different countries to understand design practices and design thinking in these contexts.

Current Students: Joachim Lyons

Funding Sources: School of Engineering Faculty Renewal grant, Hasso Platner Design Thinking Research Program grant.

Global Teams & Global Integration

Work is increasingly conducted in teams of people spread around the globe. For the last decade, we have studied the dynamics of teams of workers who collaborate across geographic distance and national boundaries. We’ve studied conflict in global teams (with Diane Bailey and Mark Mortensen), trust, subgroup dynamics (with Catherine Cramton), language issues (with Tsedal Beyene & Catherine Cramton), intercultural collaboration (with Catherine Cramton), the role of site visits (with Catherine Cramton), and communication networks (with Cathleen McGrath).

In ongoing research, we are interested in how people who are working in global teams reconcile regional differences in requirements and create global products.

Human-Robot Teams

Our goal in these projects is to explore the ways people will work with and adapt to autonomous mobile robots, to understand the possibilities and problems of mutual adaptation in human-robot interaction over time, and to anticipate changes in the group dynamics of collaborative work. We are examining how the presence of a robot affects the development of shared mental models, transactive memory, cohesion, and commitment in robot-assisted groups. We are also exploring how a robot's expertise relative to the group affects group performance.
