THE FIRST PURCHASERS OF LAND IN THE U.S. MILITARY DISTRICT IN TUSCARAWAS COUNTY LAND

According to Beers 1884 History of Tuscarawas County, thirteen quarter townships within the Military District were entered before the townships were further subdivided. The quarter townships are referred to as "sections" in the tax list and in abstracts of land office records (e.g. Family Archive CD 255 or in the "legal land description" at the Federal Land Patent Database) . They were numbered counter-clockwise beginning in the NE quadrant. Most of these early land purchasers' names appear in the original proprietor's column of the tax list. They are listed in Beers on pages 323-24 with some dates missing or incomplete.
