Auden and Administrators, Lawyers, Businesspeople
In 1939 Auden claimed to have been taught 'a contempt for businessmen and all who work for profits rather than a salary'. But his own family background (on his mother's side) contained a number of major British capitalists as well as a number of individuals whose careers in law or diplomacy inevitably hinged frequently on questions of, and the need for, profits.
As on all these 'Hotpots' pages, the 'I' number within parentheses following each name indicates the unique number assigned to the person in the "Family Ghosts" database; a search on that number will produce the full record for that person. Numerous brief biographies for all individuals mentioned on this page are available on the Web and so, with exceptions, detailed personal histories are not given in 'Family Ghosts'.
