2008, when money burned, laws were abolished, and soldiers died

Dispirited, I found myself looking forward to New Year's Eve and suddenly I imagined myself that night, lying alone on the carpet, writing with satisfaction in a notebook: "Moby-Dick, Great Expectations, Little Dorrit, Middlemarch, War and Peace, Anna Karenina, Madame Bovary -- a good year."
