| Principles of Biology: Plant Biology, Evolution, and Ecology |
| BIOSCI 43. (Mudgett,
Petrov, Gordon) |
| Principles
of plant biology: plant evolution, plant structure and function,
photosynthesis, transport, plant growth in response to nutrients,
hormones, light, pathogens, stress; Principles of
evolution: marco- and microevolution and population genetics. Ecology:
the principles underlying the changes of mass and energy between
organisms and their environments: population, community and ecosystem
ecology; population, evolution, and global change. |
| Lectures:
Monday/Wednesday/Friday 11:00-12:15pm. |
| Prerequisites:

| Plant
Biochemistry |
| BIOSCI
157/257. (Mudgett, Briggs,
Frommer, Grossman, Wang) |
| The
biochemistry of plants relevant to their physiology and cell biology.
Topics include: the biosynthesis, assembly, function and regulation of:
cell walls, lipids, pigments, photoreceptors, transporters, and the
response of plants to pathogens and stresses. |
| Lectures:
Tuesday and Thursdays 10:00-11:30am. |
| Prerequisites:
Biology Core or equivalent, or consent of instructors. |
| Offered:
Spring quarter, alternate years, offered 2011; 3 units. |
| |
| Plant
Microbe Interactions |
| BIOSCI
177/277. (Mudgett and Long) |
| Topics include mechanisms of recognition and signaling between microbes and plant hosts, with examples such as the role of small molecules, secreted peptides, and signal transduction pathways in symbiotic or pathogenic interactions. Readings will include landmark papers together with readings in the contemporary literature. |
| Lectures: Tuesday and Thursdays 9:00-10:30am. |
