detailed numerical simulations of liquid jets

a flyby around a snaphot of a numerical simulation of a turbulent liquid jet issuing into a laminar crossflow: crossflow weber number = 30; momentum flux ratio = 100. notice the complex surface structure on the windward side of the liquid jet. thin ligaments peel off the liquid core along the sides. these ligaments then break up into smaller ligaments and drops. (collaboration with olivier desjardins, u. colorado, boulder, co.)

several views of an evolving turbulent liquid jet issuing into a laminar crossflow: notice the entrainment of the droplets and ligaments in the wake behind the liquid jet column. crossflow weber number = 100; momentum flux ratio = 30.
