Balancing a Budget
Introduction
Many readers of this site are embarking on new adventures and having to manage their own money. Some people are entering college and learning how to spend and save their limited income, while others have jobs and need to maintain their finances on a larger scale. No matter where you are in life, learning to balance your budget is very important and will help you for the rest of your life.
Learn about Yourself
Before you can start to balance your budget properly, you must first learn a few key things about yourself. How much income do you make every month? What are your obligations, like mortgage, car payments, etc? What kind of lifestyle are you living, and how much money will you need to maintain that? For example, are you willing to give up frequent dinners at restaurants and trips to the movie theater, or are those essential parts of your life? After you go through these steps, you should have a reasonable sum of money left over that you can save. If not, you might consider trying to cut down on the previously listed activities.
Make a Budget
You should then write out a plan for your consumption and spending each week. It might help to put it in graph form so that you have a mental picture of what you want to do. For example, you can look at the picture below for a sample plan.

Stick to It!
It may be extremely difficult to stick to your plan at first. After all, getting that new car or going on a vacation may seem tempting, but you should try to limit these desires. You want to help plan for the future, and the sooner you learn to curb those wants, the better you'll understand your financial situation. Then, you can treat yourself when you know that you have the financial means necessary.
