Yahoo! Finance

Yahoo! Finance is an extremely large site containing investing news and tips. It also contains small sections about personal money management. Although it is quite well organized, the homepage is somewhat cluttered due to all of the ads, boxes of numerical information, and graphs. It can also be difficult to navigate. However, one of its main advantages over my site is the sheer quantity of articles that they have, and the strong Yahoo! brand name.

One of Yahoo! Finance's biggest weaknesses is that much of its content is restricted. For example, you need to get a Yahoo! account in order to access premium information about stocks and bonds. In addition, to get research reports one has to pay a fee to Yahoo! As seen on the box to the right, a report on Target (TGT) can cost anywhere from nine dollars to eighty dollars. I will offer suggestions and tips on different companies for free, so that will be a big advantage.

MorningStar

MorningStar is another investing site that is targeted to more experienced investors than Yahoo! Finance. It has more technical analysis and explains more difficult to understand terms about the stock market. It has less information than Yahoo! Finance, but their homepage is also much more clean and uncluttered. For my site, I can cater toward both seasoned and inexperienced investors by teaching all types of technical tools and analysis methods.

As you can see on this chart, MorningStar has a premium membership that requires monthly fees. Although one can use an unregistered account or a free member account, they are missing many of the most important features that an investor would need or want. As a result, I can fill a niche by providing those services free of charge instead of selling them to the readers.
