Write Me

Oh, that's why I came!

pull over and get out,
you're down, clinging to the earth,
you want the world to stop,
discover unkown reserves,
get up, brush off the dirt
get back in and don't let go."
Backseat

10/27/98 Juliana Hatfield. It wasn't until the second song of her three song encore that I realized why I drove forty miles to see Juliana. She played Backseat, a mellow song that required her whole band, but for the first time in the set her alleged back-up band didn't overwhelm her. As far as the audience cared, it was Juliana, her guitar, and her song, opening her heart and making us all listen and care.

It was a tough crowd, as part of the first annual Potrero Hill Festival, it was fair to say that not everyone in the audience was there to see Juliana. In fact, it was amusing to watch a large crowd of asian men gathered to gawk at the pretty lead singer of an all-asian opening band. Unfortunately, I can't remember their name right now, but they were pretty good. The men all seemed to withdraw from the area in front of the stage when Juliana came out.

Her back-up band was really obnoxious. Throughout her 75-minute set, her band had played very well, but their stage presence was just too animated to believe. This was particularly true for her lead guitarist. Even Juliana looked a little annoyed by him at one point.

I could only guess that he was on some kind of self-prescribed medication. Or perhaps he felt too uncomfortable backing up a far more talented woman, and needed to prove he could "really" rock out. We can only guess at what he was trying to do, but it really detracted from the quality of her show..

In any case, her set made me a believer in her latest album, Bed. She looked like she was honestly having a good time, which was good for all of us. She even cracked a smile once or twice.

You always remember your first Love
But you can forget her latest album. It sucks. It sucks so bad, I was desperately looking for the receipt to return that awful album. From the first pseudo Pat Benetar guitar fluff to the very end, it's truly wretched.
