Stanford Consortium for

Ultra Thin Film Fabrication and Nanoscale Energy Research

Goal

Our goal in this program is to fabricate, study, understand, control or modify charge transport properties, microstructure, defect chemistry, and catalytic and mechanical behavior of electrochemically active ultra thin films for energy conversion in the nano-scale regime.

Implementation

Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC) system is selected for this program due to its immense potential as a widely deployed power source for portable electronic devices. More importantly, we believe our Consortium program will offer viable and creative solutions to many of the persistent technical problems that have plagued the commercialization of DMFCs. By the end of this three-year of program, our target is to have developed and tested a 1 W membrane electrode assembly (MEA) prototype DMFC.
