The Roman emperor Hadrian (ruled 117-138 AD) built himself an enormous, sprawling country estate outside Rome near the town of Tivoli (it was GOOD to be the emperor!). The sometimes puzzling ruins of it are still there. Entire books have been written which attempt to analyze the complex architecture of it.
