The walls of Monteriggioni
The tiny Tuscan hill-town of Monteriggioni is encircled by almost perfectly preserved walls from the 1200's, and was immortalized by a mention in Dante's Inferno (in which he compared the towered, encircling walls to something or other). The town was finishing up a "medieval fair" in the main square when we happened to wander in one late afternoon, with people in period costume, but was empty of tourists (other than us) on a cloudy day in December.
