Island in the Sky, Canyonlands
One region of Canyonlands National Park is called "Island in the Sky", because it's a mesa high above the multi-level river canyons far below, stretching out nearly to the horizon, and feels much like being on an island. Strange and cool landscape, with the Colorado River on one side and the Green River on the other. In this photo, if you look at the peninsula on the intermediate-level mesa below on the right side of the photo, you can see what we think is an old, old airplane landing strip that shows up on some detailed maps of the area. There's also a 4WD road that runs along that intermediate level that you can see here & there in this photo.
