Kauai #12

At the edge of the Alakai Swamp

In the middle of Kauai, rainiest place on earth, is a swamp partway up the volcano that the island consists of. There are a few hiking trails through it, which I had been trying to hike for years. The first time, it was so rainy and windy (we were there during an actual tropical storm, I think) that we were having trouble staying more or less vertical more or less on the trail, and we gave up. The second time, a few years later, we were stopped by mud deeper than our ankles on the trail. The third time, some years later, we made it! Not to the end (since we didn't have all day to hike), but at least the several miles necessary to say that we had been into the Alakai Swamp. There's gorgeous, thick, green, alien-looking, muddy, damp jungle around it, which I love! (This is from the actual Alakai Swamp Trail.)
