Far Northern Europe

Norway #5

In the Lofoten Islands

The Lofoten Islands, off northwestern Norway, are considerably above the Arctic circle. They are an island chain with spectacular mountains; not particularly tall relative to sea level, but very steep, with very few flat places. Fishing has been the main industry for centuries, with tourists starting to show up relatively recently. Here is an excesssively scenic lump of rock along Reinefjord, on the island of Moskenes (which has the most dramatic scenery of all the Lofoten Islands). Those are traditional-style fishermen's cottages, often built slightly over the water, on the left; many of the cottages in the islands have been converted to lodging for tourists.
