Orange Gateways at Fushimi Inari Shrine, Kyoto
In southern Kyoto is a place we thought the most wonderful place to visit in Kyoto. It's the Fushimi Inari Shrine, which has miles of trails winding around the forested mountainside behind the main shrine, lined with orange-painted "torii" (gateways) donated by devotees. (In Japan, "temple" refers to a Buddhist structure, while "shrine" refers to a holy place of the pre-Buddhist Shinto religion of Japan, which believes that some natural places are holy.) There were relatively few people here, unlike some of the other more popular and accessible shrines, which added to the magical atmosphere.
