Japanese rock gardens have a great deal of symbolism not obvious to the untrained observer. This one is at the Zen Buddhist monastery of Ryogen-In, part of the Daitoku-ji Temple complex in Kyoto. The rocks in the right far corner represent a crane, the low ones on the moss "island" represent a tortoise, and the tall ones between represent a particular mountain.
