The Angkor temples were surprisingly crowded with tourists; definitely not very far off the beaten path. The more popular temples actually feel quite crowded sometimes. However, we found that the tours all head back to town (Siem Reap) between about 11 AM and 3 PM for lunch & siesta, and then the crowding level drops by about a factor of ten. A couple of hours earlier, this ancient causeway leading to Angkor Wat would have been full of tourists; during lunchtime, though, it looks like this. (Admittedly, we *were* there during peak season, because the weather would have been even more beastly hot than it was otherwise...)
