Desolation Wilderness is a beautiful wilderness area next to Lake Tahoe (California). Stark granite mountains, many lakes, and many fine hiking trails. This one is Eagle Lake, an easy hike from the road around Tahoe. (Complete with a serendipitous moon above the peaks.)
