Econometric Research econometric research related to the estimation of mail demand
Press Coverage: PostInsight Sept, 5 2005 At the invitation of Poste Italiane, experts from the postal operators of Austria, Denmark, Finland, Italy and Switzerland and Pitney Bowes met on August 29-30 in Rome to discuss the interim results of a mail demand model developed by Matt Harding from MIT. Participants were: Heikki Nikali from Finland Post, Susanne Carrebye from Denmark Post, Stefano Gori and Paolo Virgili from Poste Italiane, Urs Trinkner from Swiss Post, Peter Koppe from Austria Post, Matt Harding from MIT, Luis Jimenez, Jean-Philippe Ducasse and Anna Januszkiewicz from Pitney Bowes. The meeting was also attended by Prof. Paul Kleindorfer. This joint project - the first cross-country Panel Data model of Mail Demand ever developed- forms part of Pitney Bowes' cooperative research efforts. Using a unique dataset combining several sources, this econometric study aims to identify the main demand drivers by mail stream over a 15 year time period. It also aims to explain changes over time and differences across countries. Mail streams analyzed include B2B, B2C, C2B and C2C communication and transactional flows, B2B and B2C direct mail flows. Participating operators took part in the development of the methodology and have access to detailed study results, which will be finalized within the next couple of months. Overall results will then be published and shared with the global postal community. Future plans include extension of the model to other countries. For inquiries about participation in the next phases or information on this project, please contact Jean-Philippe Ducass, Director Global Postal Strategy, Pitney Bowes at (+1) 203 351 75 88, jean-philippe.ducasse@pb.com.
