My research focuses on the political determinants of labor market regulations in Latin America.  In my dissertation, I examine the major features of the labor legislation of 17 Latin American countries, finding three labor “regimes” or configurations that are remarkably stable across time in the region.  I attribute the cross-country variation to differences in (1) relative skill distributions and (2) the organizational capacity of unions and political parties.

I am also interested in comparative political economy, social policy in Latin America and the developing world, and the effects of democratization on social spending and public welfare.

Update: I have recently accepted a position as Assistant Professor at Georgetown University, beginning in 2009.
