I am a PhD candidate in Mechanical Engineering. I'll be graduating in June of 2008. I spend a good chunk of my time building computer models so that we can understand why things happen, and how to design tools better. The computer lets us try things out very cheaply, so that when we actually build real devices, we have a pretty good idea that they will work. Computer models also sometimes help us figure out why real devices don't work.
I am the first member of my immediate family to go to college, and I am a mechanical engineer who is a woman. I am curious about how different students learn and about the benefits that different people can bring to engineering. I research how students learn to become engineers and volunteer to help other people understand science, math, and engineering.
Most of my family lives in Oklahoma, where I grew up. In 2005, I married Scott Davies. Scott is a computer scientist who has a special interest in artificial intelligence. We live in Silicon Valley with two cats and a dog. I sing in a choir at Stanford University and both Scott and I are learning the classical guitar.
