The primary step in compressing a pair of stereo images is that of compressing the first, or reference, image. A number of approaches to this objective were attempted, involving both lossless and lossy compression. Lossless compression was evaluated for purposes such as medical imaging or editing, where artifacts are undesirable. Lossy compression was evaluated since it typically results in a significantly higher compression ratio, although at the expense of image quality.
