i was in the stanford bookstore the other day when i noticed a stationary-display in front of their magazine and card section. i walked over to see the cute journals and notecards on the display and to check out the vendor...that's when i discovered that these paper products are made from RECYCLED ELEPHANT POO! that's right folks--there is a company out there who collects poo and turns it into paper. i'm sorry but that is just awesome. oh too awesome. check em out: http://www.poopoopaper.com

as many of you know, i have recently become obsessed with the wii game 'endless ocean.' while playing it a few weeks ago, i found a new fish in the game. after petting and feeding this fish in the game, it became my friend (yay!) and once you make a friend in the game, it tells you its name and a few stats about the fish. well, this fish in particular was called *samurai squirrelfish.* at first i thought the game had made up some cool name for the fish and i was intrigued. i went online to discover the real name of this fish only to find out....that samurai squirrelfish is not only is the legit name of this little guy, but there are twenty-two species of squirrelfish! in fact, there are longspine, clearfin, yellow-striped, longjaw, blackfin, bloodspot, silverspot, threespot, reef, crown, samurai, blackspot, smallmouth, speckled, redcoat, giant, blueline, pink, dusky, violet, hawaiian, and then of course just plain old squirrelfish. who on earth discovered all these fish? and who decides when it is time to give a new name or when they just say "oh, i guess that squirrelfish has a random black spot?" i nave _never_ been into science, but i suddenly find this fascinating!

yes- the ocean is endless. but what's even better is that someone made an endless game for me to play! if you own a wii and had any sort of mild obsession with animal crossings, then this is the game for you. it's awesome. all you do is scuba dive and find fishies! and secret underwater cave and tunnels...and you can take underwater photographs and swim on the arms of dolphins and play with penguins and feed creatures and the game is just so much fun. it's endless.

i woke up at 5am today (not usual) and played this game for two hours before going to work! (might become usual) during my early morning diving, i spotted this sucker:

the whaleshark. it's the biggest fish in the ocean and yes! you can swim on his fin in the game just like in this photo. cool.

there is a fabulously fun restaurant out here with the above title. and yes, the title means what it says. this restaurant serves blowfish sushi, also known as --fugu-- in japanese. according to wikipedia, fugu contains lethal amounts of the poison tetrodotoxin. if the fish is prepared incorrectly, the poison can be released and can kill a human upon consumption. wikipedia, as well as the menu at this restaurant, also tells us that a number of people die every year from consuming fugu that has been prepared improperly.
so why, you ask, would i enjoy going to a restaurant like this? the answer is that while i am actually daring enough to try the deadly blowfish, i am sadly not rich enough and therefore just live vicariously through other upper class clientele. my friend suzy and i and asked our waitress last night if we could order the blowfish only to find out that it requires a call ahead at least 24 hours in advance. also, the dish is $195 and serves 4 people. if you call on a lucky day when they have fresh blowfish in stock, the chef will also do neat things with other parts of the fish, like prepare a blowfish-fin-infused-sake. or slice open the fatty belly and prepare that in a traditional japanese style as well.
and so, while we did not nearly taste death last night, suzy and i were able to enjoy some of the yummiest tuna i've had as of late. we were also rather impressed by the manga-covered walls and fun anime they showed on multiple screens behind the sushi bar. i would definitely recommend to any of my oh-so-daring friends to check this place out, and if anyone feels particularly inspired to taste the deadly delight, please allow me to come along and at least photograph your experience! ^^

during my junior year in college i took a sweet part-time job at a small korean-owned sushi restaurant in state college, pennsylvania. it was one of the toughest and greatest jobs i've ever had. my favorite days were when the 'regulars' would come in to dine. they were sometimes couples or small families that just loved sushi and would thus visit frequently. but more often than not, they were single folk who came three, four, five times a week. they would sit by themselves with a book and order the same thing each time. after the meal they would approach the sushi chef and share as much english as he could possibly understand. i would receive a generous tip and they'd be on their way.
growing up in white suburbia i had only ever been to restaurants with my family and it was almost always a chain. red lobster. applebees. bob evans. i had no clue that other types of eateries existed--let alone numerous holes-in-the-wall that had yet to be discovered.
thus when i graduated college, one of my goals in my '5-year plan' was to become a regular at a local hole-in-the-wall. i wanted to meet and know the face of a familiar chef each week and have a favorite item on the menu. i wanted the waitstaff to know me and know which table i preferred. sadly, i have forgotten this goal. this dream has been buried. it wasn't re-discovered until last week, when i missed the train and had an hour and half to kill waiting for joe. i bought a magazine and slipped into a local calfornia pizza kitchen and ordered an appetizer and cocktail. sitting at the bar with six others who were there alone, i felt refreshed and renewed. a stronger sense of confidence and identity fell over me and i was inspired to try it more often!
with this, i hope to encourge anyone out there to try something new today. do something unusual. step outside of your box. go to a restaurant alone. it will change your perspective.
