OK, I guess it's up to me to save newspapers
Here's the idea, in a nutshell: Bind together editorial and advertising under a new use license. You may freely use this headline and news story, IF you will also display the selected advertisement that comes with it. Robots will keep everyone honest. Imagine a headline ... "President Obama Announces Major Banking Initiative -- Brought to you by Carl's Junior and Mercury News" ... linking to a news story with a two-for-one burger coupon. Together. Wherever you read that story. Editors make sure the headline and ad are compatible.

I'm in Facebook
Well, I finally broke down and followed my lady Robin and others into Facebook, joining the wave of adult adoption of social networking. I can really see the potential for time wasting here. There were technical problems, I didn't have access for a while, but that's been fixed for a few months now. I'll try to do better. Really.Continue reading "It Sucks Getting Old"

The Decider
As I negotiated the 85-280 interchange heading North to Stanford, it ocurred to me how important decisiveness is in driving. I try to be a good driver, and I believe that requires the right balance between prudent caution and decisive action. Timid drivers mostly get in the way, and I believe in something I call "Responsibility of Way," the opposite principle of "Right of Way." That is, you have a responsibility to pay attention and take your turn promptly.

On Immigration and Evolution
Immigration has a unique relationship to the evolution of our culture in America, one that is not well understood, but worth studying. I have met many immigrants to this country and most have impressed me as humans go. And I'm very concious that at least half of my heritage (Norwegian) is from the last great wave, the other half (mostly British Isles) from the waves before that.
