This website addresses the notion of diglossia and multilingualism. First, a brief description of diglossia is presented with examples. Second, it goes on to specifically differentiate between the “High” and “Low” varieties of language by presenting a number of criteria: specialized function, prestige, literary tradition, acquisition, and standardization. After this description of diglossia, multilingualism is introduced. The site concludes with a short section regarding code-switching and code-mixing.
