SOUTH BAY BIRDERS UNLIMITED
MOUNTAIN VIEW SALT POND MAP
North is at the top. These two salt ponds are roughly in Mountain View's
borders. One of the salt water intakes for Cargill's southern evaporator
pond system is in the NW corner of A1. Mountain View Slough, the estuary of
Permanente Creek splits the two ponds. The levees on both ponds are gated and
closed to the public. Access to the ponds, therefore is limited to bike
trails in Shoreline Park that are adjacent to the ponds. Afternoon light is
best and a scope is highly desireable. Both ponds appear to have fish blooms
and, at those times, are extraordinary attractive to birds. [WGB, 2 Jan 97]
