Assignment 2- Process
As someone who grew up near Los Angeles, I naturally grew up infected with Dodgers’ pride. I attended games throughout my youth and baseball continues to hold such nostalgia for me. Vin Scully has been the Dodgers’ announcer for years and has called every game I’ve listened to. The three text elements I implemented are the three different games, moments in Dodgers’ history, memories. The three sound elements are the sounds that allow the broadcast to infect all of your senses as you suddenly feel the atmosphere of the stadium: the roar of the crowd, the sound of the game, and the tune of the organ. I decided to take clips of his broadcasts of three very memorable Dodger games (the Kirk Gibson walk off home run, the Sandy Koufax perfect game, and the Dodgers as they won the division) and play them over Nancy Bea Hefley’s organ music. She has been playing at Dodger Stadium for as long as I can remember. Finally, the sounds of the baseball game itself in the background sort of complete the feel for me, because you can have someone talking over music, but when you throw in the cheering crowd, the crack of the bat, and the shouts of the players, the recording goes from just sound to memories. Even the radio static of the old broadcasts adds an element of nostalgia as you can picture families and friends huddled around old TV’s and radios struggling to catch Scully’s always enthusiastic narrations of the game.
