Biographical sketch
Jim Bettinger came to Stanford in 1989 after 20 years as a reporter and editor at the Riverside Press-Enterprise and the San Jose Mercury News. He was a Professional Journalism Fellow at Stanford in 1982-83 and became deputy director of the program -- now known as the Knight Fellowships -- in 1989. He became director of the program in 2000. He teaches a literary journalism class at Stanford and has been a writing coach at the Palo Alto Weekly, the Bakersfield Californian and Contra Costa Newspapers. He wrote a regular column on California issues and customs in the San Jose Mercury News Sunday magazine for six years. In addition to the Mercury News, his writing has appeared in the Boston Globe, the Santa Barbara News-Press, MSNBC.com and Stanford Today.
