Visiting the Department of Anthropology

Stanford is located in the town of Palo Alto, about halfway between San Francisco and San Jose. It takes about 20-25 minutes from either SFO or SJC airport (if you get lucky!). Directions to Stanford can be found on the Stanford visitors page. This page contains a wealth of information about local transportation. Here are really detailed directions to the base of the oval on Palm Drive from the San Jose airport. If you are flying into SFO, here are detailed directions to get to the base of Palm Drive from the airport. Note that this takes a slightly longer, but far saner route than the default directions (which take you on Highway 101).

If you are staying in the Palo Alto area, Stanford has a list of local accommodations that may be helpful for finding a place that matches both budget and sensibility.

The Department of Anthropology is located in buildings 40 and 50 on the main quad of Stanford.

There are a number of parking options near the Anthropology Department. The best choice will probably depend on what day you are parking. If you are here on Friday, the closest pay lot is on Lomita Drive in front of the Cantor Art Center (which is also a nice place to visit if you have some extra time. This lot allows you to pay using an ATM card. Building 360, home of Anthropological Sciences and the Conference, is due West from this lot. All you need to do is walk toward the center of campus from the Lomita Drive parking lot. This campus map, in portable document format, is very useful for orienting yourself. There is also a searchable campus map online. The Google Map of Stanford is probably better and easier to use.

On weekends, you can park in any "A" lot. There is a small A-lot just West of the Cantor Center, across Roth Way. There are also A-lot spaces all around the oval.

If you are coming to Palo Alto from San Francisco via CalTrain, there is a free Stanford shuttle (Marguerite) that picks up at both the University and California Avenue Caltrain Stations in Palo Alto. Unfortunately, Marguerite only runs Monday through Friday. It actually isn't that bad a walk from the University Ave. Caltrain station to campus. It's probably about a mile, straight up Palm Drive (know it by the palm trees).

The Woods Institute for the Environment is located on the corner of Via Ortega and Panama St. on the Stanford Campus. Note that the building is so new that it appears only partially constructed in the Google Map Satellite image.

If you're visiting the area and looking for some good places to eat, I have a Google Earth Map here that lists a few of our favorite local places. This list is slightly biased toward kid-friendly places near our home.
