Ireland End Notes (1992)

Next time:

• End trip in a fun city for a day or so for R&R.
• Loop trip is nice. Actually no real differnce between loop and straight line (open jaws) route.
• Next time in Ireland: Dublin, Sligo, Donegal.
• Cool weather country - 2 long sleeved shirts; 1 of Thermax
• No polarfleece 200 - too bulky if trying to store in pannier
• No stove - unnecessary
• Swiss Army Knife with scissors
• Extra tent ripstop tape
• No combination lock (but take extra key for lock)
• Dried lavendar at bottom of pannier (Tracy's idea) = odor eater
• 2 pair biking shorts (one may be wet or falling apart)
• Scotchguard biking shoes and off bike pants (lightly)
• Take 9 tent stakes (sturdy)
• Velcro place on handlebar bag for dictating recorder. Take extra batteries
• Better rain footwear. Not neoprene. Gortex?
• Better rain jacket. Not gortex? But with good ventilation.
• No stove = no mug?
• Take 2 clothes pins
• Teapot and more of a stew pan with lid if taking stove
• Lexan knife
• 1 pr. wool sox - warm even when wet.
• Ditty bag (my navy one) for cosmetics. The slight extra weight is worth the convenience
• Bic lighter for stove
• Bandana for keeping stove clean & wrapped.
• Boating bag for tent & poles & ridgerest?? (too heavy?)

Next time (from a 1998 perspective)
(Same as above except:)

• Arm warmers & 1 long-sleeved shirt.
• Microfleece (instead of Polarfleece 200) anorak
• Still haven't gotten the SAK with scissors - and have survived just fine.
• Now use a brass combo lock.
• Dried lavendar is a fun idea - haven't used it.
• Take 9 tent stakes, plus 1 extra. ("Knitting needle" type works for me).
• Use Gortex sox exclusively for rain.
• Take mug no matter what.
• No teapot. Just titanium pot (if taking a stove).
• Lexan knife/fork...maybe.
• OR (Outdoor Research) bags/one for tent, etc./one for sleeping bag.
