This is the web site for the Sixth International Meeting of the Society for Social Choice and Welfare. It will be periodically updated as new information becomes available. Submitting a Paper The deadline for paper submission has passed. For inquiries contact Victoria Mason at vmason@hss.caltech.edu or HSS 228-77, Caltech, Pasadena California, 91125, USA. Conference Schedule; Click here to find a preliminary conference program. Check in will begin at 8:30am on Thursday July 11 outside of Baxter Hall on the Caltech Campus. There will be a bus to the campus from the conference hotel (the Old Pasadena Courtyard by Marriott) each morning at 8:00 am. Return trips will be made from the various dinners and receptions in the evening. There is also a free local shuttle bus (the Pasadena ``ARTS'' bus) that has a route linking Old Town Pasadena near the conference Hotel to spots near (but not on) the Caltech campus. Plenary Lectures There will be four plenary lectures: Receptions and Dinners
On the evening of Thursday July 11 there will be a visit to the Huntington
Library
and Gardens, as well as dinner and drinks at the gardens.
This is on the
estate of one of the ``Railroad Barons'' of the 19th century U.S.,
and it is a very nice excursion.
This will cost $35 a person, and those interested
can sign up when registering.
Registration Information and forms for Registration are available at the registration site. The registration fee is $170 for members of the society, a higher fee of $220 (which then includes a membership in the society and thus the journal subscription) for non-members, and a lower fee of $50 for graduate student members and $75 for graduate student non-members (including a student membership in the society and the journal subscription). Please note that the registration deadline is June 15 and there is a late charge for any registration after that date. Hotels We have reserved space at the Old Pasadena Courtyard by Marriott, at a special conference rate of $114 per night. This is an excellent new hotel which is located at 180 North Fair Oaks Boulevard, in the heart of Old Town Pasadena - the central restaurant and shopping area of the city. The phone number is (626)403-7600. Participants should make reservations directly with the hotel. Please do this soon as the reservation deadline has now passed and rooms are becoming difficult to find. There are also some other hotels close to campus to choose from. Finally, we have a limited number of dormitory rooms available, which can be requested when registering.
Finding Your Way Taxis from the LAX airport to Pasadena are very expensive
(roughly 55 to 70$). If you can split this three ways it is reasonable,
but otherwise there are more reasonable alternatives.
Super-Shuttle is a van service that operates between the L.A. airports
and any location Pasadena. The fare from LAX airport to Pasadena is about 16$,
and the trip will take an hour or so, depending on how many other
customers they have in the van. You don't need a reservation, but
can simply go to the ground transportation booth near the baggage pickup
at the airport. From airports other than LAX, you may need a
reservation (
http://www.supershuttle.com/).
There is also a bus that goes from LAX airport (at a cost of about 12$)
to the Hilton hotel in Pasadena (roughly 1 mile from campus).
If you take this option and are not staying at the Hilton, then you may still
need to take a taxi or bus to your final destination (details can be found on to
http://www.admissions.caltech.edu/visiting/directions.htm). Restaurants We put together a guide to restaurants for lunch and dinner which you can find in the pdf file scw-restaurants.pdf. The Pasadena information page also gives links to some of the local restaurants. Climate Rain is very rare in July in Pasadena. The July temperature has an average high of about 84 degrees F (29 degrees C) in the afternoon, and an average low of 65 degrees F (18 degrees C) in the night; but can get a bit hotter or slightly cooler depending on the day. Sightseeing For those of you who are arriving early or leaving later for some sightseeing, or who are accompanied by families, there are many attractions in the area. Besides the Huntington Gardens, there are some other nice attractions in Pasadena (e.g., the Norton Simon Museum [my favorite in LA and close to the conference Hotel], the Gamble House ...) You can find information at http://www.pasadenacal.com/museums.htm. In the greater Los Angeles region there are so many things to see, (e.g., the Getty Museum, Hollywood, the beaches, Disneyland, etc.), that a good guide book or a nice chat with some locals will be your best bet here.
