Henning Hillmann

Assistant Professor of Sociology | Stanford University

My main research interests are in economic sociology and organizational behavior, social network analysis, and comparative-historical sociology. Within these areas, I am particularly interested in the political consequences of economic action in various historical settings. I have explored this link in two recent articles on elite mobilization through network brokerage in Civil War England and Revolutionary America.

I am currently working on a book-length comparative study of the economics and politics of privateering in Britain and France during the long eighteenth century (c.1688-1815). In a second project, I examine how entrepreneurship is possible in fragmented economic networks and weak institutional settings, using historical data from late imperial Russia.
