What the midterm scores may mean

1) Dictation: check pattern of problems.
     - if missing several words in a row à low vocabulary and/or processing capacity;
     - if missing grammar stuff à grammar/reduced forms;
     - if getting meaning & grammar but substituting words à processing well for meaning, but may have problems learning new stuff

2) Reduced forms.
     - if missing content words à problems with word identification in fast speech and/or vocabulary;
     - if missing grammar stuff à    grammar/reduced forms

3) Lecture. Check pattern of errors. If you missed or mixed up the three major concepts (marketing, production, and sales philosophies), that is the most critical error: you may be letting details get in the way of main ideas. Note also whether you missed because you misunderstood as opposed to missing/failing to take notes. Remember this one was done without any visuals—they help you with comprehension but should not replace listening proficiency. Practice listening both with and without visuals to work on different skills.

II. Discussion of FlashACE www.stanford.edu/dept/lc/efs/FlashACE/. Helps build automatic processing of sentences; fast version helps with reduced forms. Note that you are the first group to use this since it was reprogrammed and there will be some errors: two have already been identified.

Homework: Go to FlashACE www.stanford.edu/dept/lc/efs/FlashACE/, Intermediate exercise 3. After you complete it, go back and do a dictation of items 1-5, trying to get the whole sentence if possible with one or two listenings. Take notes on how you did the exercise and the dictation and come to class prepared to discuss your experience.
