Notes Week 3 -2

I. English sound system (handouts)

        A. Consonants

        B. Vowels

II. Hillier lecture on game theory: discuss in groups

1. How are the concepts maximin, mininmax, and saddle point related?

2. Why doesn't this work with the 3rd example? How is the 3rd game "solved"

3. Does calculating the Nash Equilibrium help here? Why or why not?

III. English sound system (handouts)

        A. Syllable structure

        B. Reduced forms & linking

Homework (for 10/14): Note I recommend that you do a part of this every day for the next 4 days.

1. Go to www.manythings.org/pp .  Open files 1-12 (save 13-24 for later) and take the quiz for each, trying to get 6 in a row correct for each pair in the quiz. For any that you do not get correct, try until you can get 10 in a row without a mistake or until you have worked for at least 5 minutes.

2. Go to www.manythings.org/ac. Spend at least 30 minutes working on the concentration games there for vowels. Hint: if you don't like the concentration part, you can write the words into a 6 x 4 grid--it's less frustrating (but also less fun).

3. Do one or two lessons from www.englishbaby.com.  Be sure to listen for reduced forms and linking. Try a 3-4 sentence dictation on at least one of them, checking your answer with the script.

4. Send me (efs@stanford.edu) a short report using the same structure as last week by 6:00 PM Monday the 15th. Note the esl-lab exercises that you covered, and also explain which parts of (1) and (2) above were easiest and hardest for you in the comments section for them. For example...

Note: You do not need to review the Hillier lecture for homework: instead, we will listen to the 2nd part of the lecture together again in class Tuesday

Lessons Time Comments
EnglishBaby: Eavesdropping 10/13 9:30-9:55 PM Listened twice. Understood basic dialogue. Had trouble with details first time--need to work on faster note taking. Dictated 3 sentences--only 2 mistakes.
Files 1-12 (manythings) 10/14 8:00-8:50 PM The easiest were Lessons 2, 8 and 9 (no mistakes). The hardest were Lessons 1, 4, and 10. After 5 minutes, I couldn't get 10 in a row for Lesson 4.
Games 1-3 (manythings) 10/15 5:30-6:00 AM Game 3 was easy but I had trouble with Game 1. In particular, I can't hear the difference between beat/bit and bat/bet clearly.
