Listening Comprehension

Notes Week 10 - 1

I. Warmup. What did you do for Thanksgiving break?

II Review of "Hot Planet - Cold Comfort": www.pbs.org/saf/previous.htm. How do you use this site to improve your listening?

III. Extensive vs. intensive listening - don't do just one, and don't always use the same materials for both

IV. Friends episode

V. Introducing...another site by Randall Davis: www.ezslang.com/. This is a good place to practice listening for reduced forms and picking up common idioms.

-------------------------------------------------

Homework: No class this Thursday, but class begins next Tuesday at 9:00. No homework reports due this week, but come prepared to discuss the homework in class.

1. Take a look at www.ezslang.com/make-money-1.htm.

  1. Read the transcript first, and try to understand as much as you can about what's happening, including learning the new vocabulary.
  2. Next, set the window so that you can't see the transcript. Play the whole piece through once and try to catch the meaning.
  3. Then, listen line by line, trying to understand exactly what's said. Pause and repeat as needed (and don't forget to expand RealPlayer for better control).
  4. After you think you have understood the line (or part of it, if it's long), scroll up the transcript and check. Continue throughout the dialogue.

Come prepared to discuss your impression of this procedure for improving various listening skills (listening for meaning, processing fast speech and reduced forms, increasing vocabulary, etc.)

2. FlashACE Advanced 4 and 5: www.stanford.edu/dept/lc/efs/FlashACE/. Try to use it as a quiz first, then go back and review.
