Gendered Voices
February 26, 2007

Perhaps the first thing we notice about gender in language is the speaker's voice - its pitch, its quality, and its changeability. While voice is to some extent affected by the configuration of the vocal tract, which may in turn be related to the speaker's size, there is no clear relation between voice and biology. However, there are considerable differences on average between males' and females' voices - and considerable cross-cultural differences. In this class, we will examine a variety of issues related to voice.
