Gender and the Sounds of English

The sound system of any language provides a wide variety of resources for indexing gender. Today's class will provide some introduction to phonetics to serve as background, and will begin our discussion of gender and the sounds of language.

The University of Iowa offers an interactive articulatory phonetics website, which shows a moving sagittal view of the articulatory organs pronouncing the sounds of English.
