The Father of Sleep Medicine, Dr. William Dement will host an online conference, Thursday, May 20, 10 pm EDT! During the online conference he will discuss how to get a good night's sleep and answer questions from participants.
This Web-based event is hosted by BetterHealth.com, a division of iVillage: The Women's Network
(iVillage.com), in cooperation with the National Sleep Foundation (NSF). Mark your calendar to log on to betterhealth and check out this online event!
Better Health is also adding more sleep resources to its site, and will also include Dr. Dement in its popular "Ask the Expert" section. Responses to select sleep questions submitted by Internet users will be published, and Dr. Dement will respond to up to four questions a month. (5/20/99)

OCTOBER 1998
On Thursday, October 29, 1998, The Space Shuttle Discovery (STS-95) will blast off with former Astronaut John Glenn among its crew and will be studying among other things, the effects of spaceflight on astronaut sleeping patterns. Check out the countdown to launch web site too!
The Sleep-2 experiment will evaluate the normal sleep patterns of crew members before, during, and after space flight in order to identify the factors that may be contributing to sleep disturbances that are known to occur during space flight. This experiment will also perform a preliminary evaluation of the effectiveness of the pineal hormone melatonin as a hypnotic during space flight. Crew activities include donning the sleep gear and manual testing of alertness during several flight days, as well as providing and processing urine samples.

- On April 1, 1998 the Oprah Show had Dr. James Maas, the author of "Power Sleep," as a guest. The subject was Sleep Deprivation in America.
The last NASA Mission, STS-90 had NEUROLAB aboard the Columbia Space Shuttle. Aspects of sleep are being studied by the SLEEP TEAM, led by sleep Doc Charles Czeisler of Harvard Medical School and Dr. J.B. West of the California University at San Diego. (4/98)

- On Wednesday, March 11, 1998, the author of "Power Sleep," Dr. James Maas spoke at Printers Inc. Bookstore, in Palo Alto, California at 8pm. (3/9/98)
- On Tuesday, March 3rd, Dateline NBC aired a report on sleep deprivation that explored its physical and professional ramifications. Included was a study of an Indiana glass factory that addressed the problem among its employees.
- March 25th the National Sleep Foundation held a press conference to reveal the 1998 Omnibus "Sleep in America" Poll results and to kick off "National Sleep Awareness Week," March 30 - April 5.

- On Friday night February 6, 1998, DATELINE NBC did a segment on the new "blue light therapy" to treat jet lag.

- The San Francisco Examiner Magazine had an article "Overcoming Sleeping Sickness," by Jeremy Larner, (screenwriter who wrote "The Candidate") who suffers from sleep apnea. The same article appeared in the Nov. 1997 issue of New Choices magazine. (1/18/98)
- There is a new discovery that helps reset the body's internal clock. It involves shining a bluish light on the skin behind the knees at specific times during the day. This discovery was made by Scott S. Campbell and Patricia J. Murphy of Cornell University. Their findings were published in the Journal Science(free registration), and is offically titled "Extraocular Circadian Phototransduction in Humans." It currently answers questions like "What is Central Sleep Apnea (CSA), What are the symptoms of CSA, How is CSA treated and what is mixed apnea." There is also an abstract about CSA and links to other sleep sites.

- The National Academy Press selected The Sleep Well site as "The Cool Science Link of the Day," on January 24, 1997! The National Academy Press is the publisher for the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council. Way cool!
