Peterson Middle School was selected as the site for the STEP summer school program. It is part of the Santa Clara Unified School District. Originally constructed as a high school, Peterson has a 3-acre campus with science laboratory facilities, three computer classrooms, a large library, an ecological preserve area, a large courtyard with picnic tables, and swimming pools. The middle school students in the summer program reflect the considerable ethnic, linguistic, and socioeconomic diversity of Santa Clara's student population.
